Yeah, I loved it when it was a joke...

It's sad it'll become the truth pretty soon. Somewhere something must have gone terribly wrong. Probably humans.

i remember when i was 19, i lived/worked in San Antonio and would come visit my family every other weekend or so (who lived about 70 miles away) and i would make sure and top off my tank so that i had enough gas to get from san antonio and back (and fart around a little) cuz there was NO WAY IN HELL i was gunna pay $1.10 for gas (in my families area) when i could get it for $0.89 in san antonio.

Heh, with the current ?-$ course, gasoline costs about ?1,50 here, that's why I was talking about the future. I forgot that it's more expansive when recalculated to dollars.

But it's ridiculous. What will we do if prices get any higher? Well, of course that's an easy answer. Alternative power sources become more and more commercially attractive. I guess natural power (wind, water, sun and such) and nuclear power (both fusion and fission) get more popular in the future. Hydrogen has been opted as a good power storage, since it costs as much energy to create as it generates when burned to water. That will probably be the future: power plants use some of their generated power to generate hydrogen, which is sold as fuel for cars. All emission is water.

I only hope the greenhouse effect hasn't gotten too strong by then.

When I started driving about 4 years ago, gas was right at/under a buck. Fuck my life.

Wisconsin eh? Judging by that price I would say somewhere north of Milwaukee. I live in Milwaukee here, $3.89. I was just in Chicago for Lollapalooza and it was at $4.29

@pest: back when i started driving (about 13 years before you were born), gas was between $0.89-$1.00/gallon US. and if someone said "Gas will be over/near $4.00/g within the next 10 years" we woulda laughed AS IF IT WERE A JOKE.

Science fiction usually uses dramatically increased gas prices to show a dystopian future. One of the better ones I can remember is the TV show Dark Angel, where gas is shown as $9.99 regular, $10.99 premium, and $11.99 diesel or something along those lines. In this example, the game Deus Ex shows their dystopian future of 2052 have gas prices at today's actual prices of near $4 per gallon.

Wow things aren't funny when you have to explain them.

I wonder when gasoline is gonna hit ?2,00 here in Europe. Probably first in the Netherlands. Even though most EU-distribution of gasoline actually starts here, we got the highest prices of the whole EU. No-one knows how that is possible. The petrol companies say it's because of problems with their positions on the Dutch petrol market, but I think that's rubbish.
