last week i made a video and put it on youtube showing the examples in lighting differences and put them all into a small video to show people why there are others that prefer to play with HDR.
Half-Life 2 Lighting Examples

A few days ago I just got a clip done which took me all day where i made a room from scratch using the measure textures while taking pictures in-game after compiling when i add a brush or change a texture. I start from making the very first brush for the floor then start working my way around the map until i finally have a finished map for looks or as a background.

Final Product:
Imageshack

Today i just got another movie done where I make a hallway detailed to the maximum using dev textures again, only this time i pushed it much much further.

Wow, I can't imagine the ammount of work that must have been, every time you add a brush compile, launch the level, take a screen... and afterwards putting them together for a movie.

Great work you've done there! The maps are gorgeous, even with only dev textures.

As I do too. . . More interesting then tutorials.. Tutorials give you the answers right away.. Speedup films keep you guessing, which is fun. I wanna do one someday. . If only I did not get up as much..

Thanks for sharing this Mapster. I always map with textures but I'm going to give this method a try. It is kind of depressing that your dev maps have more atmosphere than my "finished" products. Maybe this will help me learn to better use lighting.

A zombie master map where all of the light in the map isn't controlled by one ZM-sabotagable object? That's not right.

I enjoy making maps using the measure textures, and if i make a really good map and chuck a tiny light in it, then no one will see the actual detail put into the map.

Thats really the reason why i stopped making maps for Portal, because most of the maps are very similar, it's just the obstacles that are different.

well, I like when people make the map more interesting. The atmosphere and the content really gets old after a load of maps. . . That is why I'm taking Blue Portals back to the drawing board. I want a new look for it. And if people complain about it, I'll link then to Project beta. .

So ether way, I like both old and new, I'm not scared to try/play new looks. I just wish people made maps more interesting when they make it out of the Aperture style.

Every room of every map has the same textures and environment settings, i like to try and use multiple textures even though they look the same, but at least they are all very striking when they are set out right.
Now I'm not trying to knock Portal or anything, it's still an awesome game but i think if people want good environments they could at least add more to the maps instead of just a wall with lights to the side.
