Would it not be confusing for portal gun users?
How could they differenciate between their own blue portal and the blue portal put by another guy?

Wow that website is a joke...I hope they aren't really planning on doing anything. The only thing thats actual content on there are some icky looking anti-aliased icons on the homepage. Their "video" is just a mod with the exactly Portal code, a different start-up screen and...well...that's it. I don't see any evidence of other people in their game, any rules...anything. That and the horrible music coupled with the Halo 2 logo on his desktop (god how can you use a computer with that there, it would drive me nuts) makes me believe this won't amount to anything.

Haha, wow - that video is about 50% just getting into the game and loading the map (in a freaking window at that). Then you get to watch him play (and die) at 5fps in an official portal map.

What a load.

I see not a single reason why not to make Portal Multiplayer.

And the question is: what would make the game mode interesting?

There would be no sense of choke points or terrain strategy, and any weapons involved would have to be grafted in from some other game.

I would love to see screenshots or a design doc or a tech test of some way to make this an interesting and fun game. But I just don't see it.

I think co-op would be cool, the one with one color for each player. and there could be flings.

I was thinking, what about one where there is only one portal gun, and the 2 players have to "give" the gun to each other by bumping into each other or pressing E near them. this could make for some interesting puzzles where the player without the gun is in another room, but is like a walking companion cube, pressing buttons and stuff. then there could be slots you could pass it through. just a thought.

thats not a bad idea at all. HOWEVER. 2player multiplayer games rarely do well. people want to get on and KILL KILL KILL
now if this was just a mod someone worked out. it might be ok. but i doubt it would get LOTS of acclaim, cuz you would have to find a friend, and since we spend all our time online... we don't have any of those.

For KILL KILL KILL they have CSS, DoD and TF2. If you only want to KILL KILL KILL you're not playing Portal anyway.

oh i know. keep in mind i'm portal obsessed.
i'm just talking about a multi-player mod making it, and typically people want to interact with other people.... by kililng them.
Like i said COD's ideas were actually pretty good. the only way i think portal MP would work is in some sort of co-op mode.

Maybe we could add the KILL KILL KILL with thinking... So that Both players are in different rooms (laberynths) And in the labyrinths there are lots of bottoms jumps and all that. So if you press a bottom the other player gets a shock-wave or something and losses health (this means no regenerative health) or adding rocket-launcher, all that things. And try to kill the others with your team, resolving puzzles and that. The more puzzles you resolve a new map will be added to you to play. Or could be a random map...

lol ok you are in 2 different rooms. if you were like 10 people on the server. 5 is in ea room. then you solve puzzles in these rooms and when you done that you reach a button to make the ones in the other room lose hp. until 1 team win. when you press the button you are teleported to start in a fizzler so your portals get closed.

EDIT: i mean of course.. theres alot of puzzles and a button in the end of ea one

Would that get too easy after a while for people who have played it more than once? After you learn the puzzles you are pretty much guaranteed to win. Wouldn't work at all, imo. Not on a fun factor or working factor.

(for once) i understood that

what hes saying is:

have 2 teams, each with an identical puzzle series. at the end of the puzzles is a button, which kills the other team when pressed.

so its basically a race to the finish to kill the other team

Or just have a random timer (longer timer simulates playing against babies, shorter against Lorithad) under which to complete the puzzle, and if the timer runs out, you die.

My, doesn't that sound like fun.

Quote:
[Portal Project Lead Kim] Swift also stated that the team creating the Portal sequel are currently deciding upon the design they should implement and that a multiplayer Portal "from a technology standpoint is possible", though Swift had previously stated they tried a Portal multiplayer variant, but admitted that "Honestly, it's less fun than you'd think."

i didnt say they died i said the lost some hp.. and btw remmiz.. there could be more than 1 map and more than 1 puzzle in ea map.

We need a poll...

I can easily imagine loads of fun gametypes for portal multiplayer. The problem with having fun with portal multiplayer is mostly dependent on the map. If there's modular floors and walls everywhere it's no fun. There should be metal floors to be safe on too.

Many people say that portal is a puzzle game and is not about shooting other people. That is true, but that doesn't have to mean that the Portal Gun can't be used in combat multiplayer games without having fun.

and although this is true. Portal did so well, cuz it filled a void in todays modern gameing. there are plenty of FPSOMP games out there. We (atleast I) love this game cuz its smart, funny (albeit dark, and dry (which is what i like))) and makes you think. The question shouldn't be: CAN you make portal multi-player. but SHOULD you?
