Hey there!
We have an introduction thread, so I merged your thread here.

Welcome, I learnt hammer with portal too, it's a pretty good place to start since it lends itself to simple geometry and quite boxy rooms. It lets you concentrate on making a fun puzzle instead of making a gorgeous environment.
Although, IMO, portal is the most difficult entity wise for a beginner.
I started to make a Portal map for the contest with "The Reveal" theme. We'll see if I can do it.
That's about it, really. I hope some of the original members return now that the forums are back up and kicking. Partly because when P2 comes out I have a feeling more than one active moderator will be needed.
DISCLAIMER:
I cannot map. I cannot code (though I might be able to in a few months). I have no talent whatsoever in any way, shape, or form. I can and will be the forum's friendly neighborhood lurker.
I'm HeroofDarkness. Hero for short. I was invited to your steam group by a friend (idk if he is on the forums) RohanRider.
Portal History:
Beat Portal in 3 hours
Prelude in 3 weeks
Second time on prelude 3 days
I'm always looking for a good challenge when it comes to portal. I've already beaten two of your fan maps and I love the challenge put forth in them. I unfortunately fail at programming much beyond a calculator program that will do my hw for me so I probably won't be putting up any maps. But with the challenge I've seen in the first two this shall be a fun ride.
I'm mostly a mapper (Hammer-Editor of course) and graphic designer (using GIMP). Other than that I have experience with PHP/HTML, JS, Flash, Photoshop (only for concept arts), AHK and RPG-Maker (
).
I "work" as a level artist / graphic artis / webdesigner / something at Cranox Interactive (an independent studio working on it's first game). Here is our site (german!): http://www.cranoxinteractive.com
My last Source project was "Emergency Broadcast" for Left 4 Dead. It got cancelled for various reasons but you can still view some stuff here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/emergency-broadcast
And i'm currently working on my entry for the October-contest.
What else?
The games I'm waiting for to be released: Portal 2, Half Life 3, Monkey Island 5
And my favourite type of cake is jaffa cake.
Oh, and i made a little papercraft Companion Cube
.

Half Life 3
Let's not get ahead of ourselves here...
Episode 3 is coming out the night of the apocalypse, we are not expecting Half Life 3 until the end of the universe...valve time considered of course.
BTW: I'm Hero, I am not in anyway able to map, but I would love to test the challenges anyone's maps put forth...also I kinda like to exploit bugs so don't put those in either
Welcome also.

Fortunately my maps never have any bugs...
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some bugfixing to do in my maps
.
Just wanted to drop a quick note here to introduce myself, it's the right thing to do
I'm a Source Engine modder and I've lurked on your forums from times to times to look through posts and tips for Portal level creation, as well as your wiki. As a level designer in training, I'll be uploading a level shortly to gather feedback, since I want to use it as a portfolio piece, so feel free to look at it and give your opinion!
Pardon my English, this girl is French
