When you get past the video and the introduction part you're already near the bottom of the screen, you could maybe have announcements and News headlines but not whole entries.EDIT: Updated the beta site - http://myapertureinnovations.com/BetaPages/index.html
What about my suggestion that everyone liked?
"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to myApertureInnovations! Mappers, modders, players; you're here because we want the best, and you are it! So, who's ready to make some science?"

Make sure you add "Nope, couldn't keep a straight face" after ".. and your it!"
But yeah, that should be added before what is there now.
As long as for meaningless stupid and dumb posts there's Funder's duck I don't really believe such topics are really necessary.
What I imagine off topic being like is more of a discussion on topics that are just not Portal. Things like arranging meetings, cool events, news articles etc. etc., topics that are indeed off topic but not just ... stupid...
And it would be nice if mods reinforced this too... And not you know, edit my posts where I express my negative opinion about given subject to make it look as if I am actually contributing...
Just one of the examples, dunno who would consider that funny or 'epic' but I dont...
Just my 2 cents.
EDIT: Also I've just noticed there are no official forum guidelines established so far, so maybe it might be good idea to start working on those... And put what I said above there.

Agreed.

Meetings are impossible, considering that those of us who live in the United States are scattered too far apart for that sort of thing. More Portal-related stuff will flood in nicely if/when that database gets set up. I'm guessing that isn't exactly going to happen soon.

Spiderman memes and watermelons. I'm not even going to pretend that some other mods and I (mostly me) weren't contributing as much as everybody else, which leads to your fourth point...

Been sort of wondering about that for a while. As far as guidelines for behavior, I'd suggest nothing outright pornographic, no off-topic threads unless they are something legitimately different than a fad that can live in tFD, and general no-spam-type stuff. Censorship was enacted as a joke relatively early on, and it was very unpopular, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that people are going to want to swear and curse however they like on here.

Meeting was just an example... Sheesh... But you get the idea

Yep, those are the general guidelines all know and still apply, kind of a common sense on the internet now...
Still has to be written down to make it clear what's good and what's not.

F.uck yes

Maybe, only as an inside joke, replace f-ck with duck all the time?
Try quoting this post
As for the watermelon thread...I see no problem with it.

I'm not the best to say that, since I contributed, but I find the topic useless, all you guys are doing on there is posting watermelon images that you found on google images' first five pages; we can do better then that...

Off-topic =/= useless
Politics would be off-topic, but not useless
Watermelons is just, well, silly, unrelated the the void and simply useless

It does provide great pleasure watching fantastic sculptures of melons! Who doesn't like art? Other than trolling, I suggest a useless section in Off-topic.

I don't like the useless section idea, because it would be ducking useless...

Such as... posting watermelons?
In between writing a download database from scratch...yeah.

The point of Off-Topic is useless, random stuff. It's not based entirely on other-game news and such, so as silly as the Watermelon thread is, it still fits. if you don't like it, then don't read or post in it, it's that simple.
A new section for useless stuff, however, is pointless given what I just said.

You've been awarded with -1 Aperture Science reputation point.

Agreed.
