Off-topic has always been random stuff, I remember back when it was most in use on mAL I and sven had to start trimming threads past page 3 to stop the place from overflowing with hundreds of the damn things..

It did get a bit hectic but overall it was harmless...

My main concern with it is that people will allow the other areas of the forum to fall into disuse.

I vote for badges to be integrated into the forum.

small icons underneath our avatar. the stalemate outline for admins, cube badges for amazing map creators, portal guns for good testing users (quality feedback), turrets for high activity on the forum etc.

I'd imagine they'd all be either chrome/black and white colours.

thoughts?

Icon bages has always been something we wish to do with mAL and here. But we (not really myself) are currently working on the pages and the database. Then we can add all the bells and whistles to the forum.

If I may ask on that note, will we be attempting to intergrate Steam with this site? or the workshop?

Like, how Gmod's file system has steam login.

plus, if we could intergrate a workshop feature into the database, we'd become pretty popular quickly.

An idea was to link the workshop with the site, and then share the best editor maps on the workshop submited by a member or not, along with Hammer Portal, and Portal 2 maps.

I doubt Valve will link us with the Workshop, but we can still share maps on there. A database is still importaint for people who wish to add a lot of new textures, models, and of course Portal 1 maps. We can also share other things like mate rails, models and scripts alone without a map.

Most P2 maps, hammer or not, can just be uploaded to the workshop (no multiplayer yet, but my guess is that they'll be ready for them sooner than our database will), so I think we can integrate any of those that are small enough to upload with the Workshop.

I heard something that Multiplayer will be released once the workshop is all done. Community maps will most likely use the Art Therapy entrance.

The workshop is still not perfect. I can not upload any maps to the Workshop, and only bsps are only acceptable at this point being vpks are broken. Also there is a 100MB limit, and only playable content can be uploaded, making no room for skins, new models, new sounds to be hosted alone.

And going back to Portal 1 since a goal of ours (Well atleast for me) is to support both games equally. If we had a database for Portal 1 maps only, and told Portal 2 players to go to a database, that would not be a consent method in sharing our creativity.

Is there no way to get links to the "subscribe" buttons on the maps?

If we could, we could simply supply the URL to the page, and the code to find the subscribe button could convert that to a subscribe link.

or, just a normal link. but if we can get users to subscribe via mAI, then we'd be in the clear on supporting the workshop.

WE could (relatively) simply add a "Steam workshop link" to the map posting sheet in the database, it wouldn't be obligatory, but it could encourage users to vote it on the workshop. People want to get popular on the workshop, so if we give them an opportunity to post their link on a site where a lot of people see it and rate it, we'll have a lot of new members

EDIT: My post is pretty much an extension to Kizzy's ^.^

Yep. except I was suggesting to make mAI subscribe the user to the map automagically by a link.
I mean, Steam can do it through it's browser. there should be a way to do it externally.

but that's a good backup solution.

yep, definitely would be! we'd seem to have their support, but really, would all be clever trickery of links.

To upload one, all you'll have to do is put in the link - it will automatically fill out Title, Description, etc. And automatic subscribing, though I'm not sure about that one. I might need to put a "sign in through steam" thing on the site.

also, wow. that's what I wanted to suggest, but held back as it seemed WAY out of the league of a small forum. glad to see you're exceeding my expectations!

Sounds neat. I forget a handful of people here have knowledge in JavaScripting.

I don't think a a "sign in through steam" will be necessary. So what if some jerk submits your map? It will still link to your Steam account.

The "sign in through steam" would only be necessary for subscribing on-site. It'd probably be added afterwards if at all.

That would be great, but I think an additional manual fill up sheet could be available, too, since I still prefer the manual download, install and run by console method.

Of course, I'm still working on the traditional download database. It's likely to be a while still, though, as I am more a noob at PHP and SQL than I thought.
