Good News: This looks awesome.

Bad News: It seems it will be for TF2 only:

Quote:
The SFM allows a storyteller to create an entire movie on location inside the video game world of Team Fortress 2. Movies exported with the SFM can be uploaded to the web or shared like any normal movie file.

Of course, you could probably import other game models into TF2 or make your own models if you ever wanted to use SFM to portray other games.

I signed up, I just hope I get accepted. By the look of it it can do a lot more than just TF2. (Seeing as how Valve used it for a bunch of other titles) I hope I'm able to make some interesting Portal 2 videos with it soon.

This looks really good. So we don't need to make animations for the models and compile them in, or we don't have to make extra maps (more or less).
Well, that's again a proof on how good Valve is any why other developers can learn a lot by looking at them.

So how exactly will you know when you got accepted? Will it come by e-mail, or will you be informed on Steam?

Although I'm not disputing how awesome Valve are, by far one of the best developers (if not THEE best), isn't SFM just adding to the SDK what UDK and CE3 already have?

No sense not adding a feature just because other engines already have it.

That wasn't my point, I'm happy they're adding it. My point was they're the third (or fourth, I THINK Unity has it too) developer to add it, so perhaps learning from Valve in this case, isn't more beneficial than learning from Epic/ CryTek/ Unity.

UDK doesn't have anything remotely like SFM and neither does CryEngine, to the best of my knowledge.

UDK has Matinee - http://www.unrealengine.com/en/features/cinematics
CryEngine has Cinebox - http://mycryengine.com/index.php?conid=59

Or am I missing something?

Matinee doesn't (to the best of my knowledge, I'm certainly not an expert user) allow you to actually create custom animations (rather than using animations that were compiled with the model) on the fly. I've never really used Cinebox but after a bit of google searching it doesn't look like it can do it either.

I could be wrong.

I really want this. My favorite part is the ability to capture player motion, and use it as a backbone to base the rest off of. I also think, at least based on the tutorials they've posted, that you'll be able to import models from other games if they're not already included.

I've been hearing rumors that you can export the edited animations to an actual model file, but that the exported file isn't .ani or .smd but some new format. Anyone got info on this/can confirm it, because it sounds awesome!

Actually, I didn't get it just now. Turns out I had it for 3 days before noticing it in my Steam Library.
