Looks lovely. Haven't played it much, cause it's a bit late and don't want my head to explode before going to bed. Will finish it tomorrow!

But i noticed a couple of issues you might want to check.
1. Portal placement gone bad. <image>
2. Cube has a bad habit to stuck a bit in there. <image>
3. I could walk through the dirty cube, found out while trying some weird stuff.

thx for the fast feedback! fixed 1. and 2.
Anyone else had that bug with the unsolid cube? Everything seems fine when im playing.

nice dude and thanks for the video! but it contains an unintended part that i will change. your solution is a bit too easy. upload coming soon...

Really well thought out short map - thanks!
Once I'd figured out to switch the cubes it played out more or less like Xtreger's vid =)

Oh and the unsolid cube is the game's doing. It happens sometimes when you reposition a funnel that's pushing a cube against a button, and less frequently when you and the cube are pressed up together in a funnel sometimes. You can do it in pretty much any map with a cube and button; nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the info! Didn't know that...
You should definitely try out v1.2 it's way more trickier. U'll like i promise!

edit
I'm so dumb.... that thing I did there in v1.2 is completely nonsense. I need a few more minutes to fix the unintended solution.

Finished, but I'm not sure if correctly: I changed the cubes and got myself to the topfloor. From there, I dropped the cleancube into the funnel and kind of estimated when it would land on the lower cube receiver. It worked so I then portalled a dirty cube up to the higher cube receiver.

Anyways, great map again!

Nice one! I like your solution. I tried this for myself and it works pretty good. I thought it would be hard to time the drop but in v1.3 its even easier because you can see the cube. Anyways nice find!
I'll move that button a little to block your solution. Thanks and try again

Small and somewhat easy map, yet not too much. Like the challenge, and the room is nicely designed.

Impeccably designed map and it required a lot of thought and planning. But I'm not sure I did it correctly because I put a cube on the two-dot button first and then onto the one-dot button to finish. Just wanted to say this was a great little map and I would highly recommend it.

Edit: Here is my solution:

1. Activate funnel on the right side.
2. Place the dirty cube from the left chamber on the portable floor.
3. Go up to the second level. Put the funnel under the dirty cube and let it rise to the top.
4. Move the funnel entrance portal to high on the wall under the cube dropper in the right room, flinging the cube into the funnel.
5. Move the portals to stream the cube to the button in the left room.
6. From the left room place a portal under the laser grid in the middle room and then another on the floor under the cube dropper. Press the button to let the cube drop through the portal into the middle room.
7. Position the cube in the middle room in line with the laser pointed at the receptor.
8. Take the cube in the right room and take it up to the second level.
9. Create a funnel to the button on the wall again and put the cube in it to deactivate the fizzlers.
10. Go up to the third level. Go get the clean cube from the left room and place on the two-dot button.
11. Go down, then up to the second level.
12. Place portals so funnel pushes cube in the middle room into fizzler and immediately place portals under cube dropper in left room and high on wall in right room, flinging the cube towards you.
13. Catch and place on one-dot button.
14 Exit.

Edit Two: Just saw Jacu's video, and mine is very similar.

Enjoyed this map a lot, much more than Heavens Gate. This puzzle kept me thinking for few hours, but finally I did it. Here is my solution, I strongly believe, the intended one

ufXlYhshydg
will be avaible after a while

I know, that moving aimed cube is not necessary, cause I finished the map without it, but I can't remember how I did it:D

Btw there are still problems with cube stucked in cubedropper

HAHA I think both solutions are quite similar but I have to admit that your solution to get the cube in the middle is more "logical". My keypoint was getting the cube behind the fizzler to kill it with the funnel. You both did that so both count as intended solution

Finished it, amazing. Btw, i did the thing in the video above to bring the cube in the middle room and i wondered if this was intentional or not. Seeing it's posted and got... the marKiu seal of approval, all is fine.

Btw, the unsolid cube issue i mentioned on my previous post, it was indeed random. Never got it again.

sicklebrick • Mar 23, 2012 • #59087

Heh, 1.0 was a great map, but this is much better! It feels more solid and gave the brain a whole nother workout =)

I used a slightly different way from Jacu to get the cube into the middle - probably an easier way, but much less cool factor and more repetition. (Wish I'd thought of that.. I've already used that mechanic in a map!)

The cube dropper on the dirtycube side sometimes sticks, then stays stuck nomatter how much noclipping you do... could it be something to do with timing and the dropper pre-spawning the next one for you? A few times I found myself scouring the level for the cube only to find it had decided not to pop its head out, and restarted the map confused.

Anyhoo, again, great map, good fun

Hah same.. I did it once without thinking then spent ages trying to replicate.
Easier when you remember that you don't have to switch the cubes this way

@AlmmxOo0o
Wow nice jump you pulled off there. I'm impressed. I'll fix that in the next update. Thanks for feedback.

@sicklebrick
Thanks for the video... I think it's the same solution that RogerL used. I could block this easily by replacing the laserfield with a grate. But somehow I like that solution. Mhhh I don't know if I should remove it^^. Well I'll remove the problems with the dropper and fix some cosmetics.

@Jacu
Yes, this is the 4th room from Heavens Gate. In my opinion it does not fit to the other maps. Because of the difficulty it can stand as a single map and as you can see it needed a lot of updates because of the unintended solutions.

I loved this map, an easy 4/5. It has just a touch of Chander's dirty trickery. However, the key parts of this are not controller friendly. Sliding the cube sideways while keeping it on the laser catcher is hard, because small movements are very touchy on a controller. I managed to get that done on the fourth try, so it wasn't impossible.

The quick turn and shoot for the final fling is very nearly impossible with a controller. You can have speedy turns, or accurate aiming, but getting both is far more a matter of luck than skill. But I'm stubborn as a mule (and almost as handsome!) and I came up with this easy variation that is controller friendly. Note that the cube is still sticking in the dropper.

I got it.

I got it ! !

I really really got it !!

KennKong - I thought I needed a lighting fast shoot the portals, spin around and run back. But I found that I did not need to be fast on the turn and run back, because the cube just keeps dropping and fizzling until I meandered over there and grabbed the 3rd or 4th cube drop.

The ole dirty-clean cube switch-a-roo
That was very insidious of you MarKiu, I must say.
It took me an entire week but I finally really got it.

@kennkong
Happy you liked it! I had only a small portable surface under the dropper in the beginning. That didn't allow double floor portals. But then I though, before kennkong breaks his f7 key again, I'll better change that so you can always respawn the cube by shooting it into the fizzler.

@pcdoc
INSIDIOUS! I like that
Hope you had a great time solving it.

You are correct in that you don't have to be quick on the run back. But if you can't turn and shoot the portal in the opposite wall quickly, the cube will land somewhere without being fizzled. Just thinking about it as I write this, I realize I haven't tested leaving the portal in the wall by the dropper and shooting the other one under the dropper. If the cube will reach the fizzler from that low on the wall, then the quick turn is indeed a moot point.

EDIT: I've tested using the low wall portal surface. If you place it at the top edge, and get the other portal directly under the dropper, it works just fine.

This reminds me of a point I have about better map design. In this map, if you blow that fling, there is a long reset without a quick save. I really appreciate it when mappers anticipate the mistakes players will make, and provide an easy reset at that point. Some map designs lend themselves to obvious placements of autosaves, others don't. I really don't appreciate getting trapped in a death loop. And quick saves aren't always the best answer, either. You lose gel placed on lightbridges, reflectocubes can shift position, cubes in funnels can be dropped, buttons pressed by cubes with funnels or lightbridges can be unpressed, and the list goes on . . .

BTW, congratulations on solving this one. If I hadn't been so well trained by the likes of Jonatan, Chander and grayarea, to mention just a few, this one would have taken me a long time to solve. Even so, I didn't publish my blind playthrough because it had about an hour of me putting cubes in receptacles, then running back and forth, accomplishing nothing. Try to imagine the Keystone Kops or the Three Stooges as a solo act!

KennKong • Apr 01, 2012 • #59099

@MarKiu While trying to test whether the cube would hit the fizzler from the low portal surface, I was walking the cube toward the fizzler, failing many times because of the twitchiness of my trackball. So I was using a lot of quick saves, then the game crashed, and crashes every time I load my last quick save. The error messasge is:

physicsclonearea: backwards mins/maxs

marKiu • Apr 03, 2012 • #59100

I tried to replicate this error but it never occured and I tried to google something about the physicsclonearea but I couldn't find anything. Don't know how to fix that. Maybe it's about to many interacting stuff when quickloading :/ I'll see if I can find something about that... Thanks for the feedback.

Gig • Apr 04, 2012 • #59101

I found an unintended solution but my upload speed is slow, so basically what i did was swap the cubes then make the rusty cube in the middle of the fizzlers facing the receptacle, went up to the top, got both cubes up to the top, then placed one in the cube-button, then i made a portal on the wall next to the clean-cube dropper, made one on the floor underneath the rusty-cube dropper, and flung into it straight into the middle cube button, level complete =D

How did you manage to jump that far? Have you played the latest version? If not please sent me a screenshot how you did the last jump into the middle area. Thx for feedback.

PCdoc • Apr 06, 2012 • #59103

I also had a Save that crashed every time I reloaded it.
It was while I had both cubes in the clean dropper area.

It would be impossible to replicate so I would not worry about it.
I ended up starting over and all was well.

redunzl • Apr 06, 2012 • #59104

I did manage to finish this one but not entirely on my own. I got as far as figuring out that I needed to swap the cubes because the solution required fizzling the last cube to get it to where you need it to be, and had the "clean" cube to its final position without too much trouble. I got completely stuck at that point and ended up watching a video to figure out where I went wrong. After I did, I realized that I probably would not have been able to figure it out on my own.

On the bright side, I was able to execute the solution, unlike some of the "expert" maps that require skills far beyond my own. However, I found the drag the cube past the fizzler while keeping it pointed at the laser receptor to keep the fizzler turned off part to be exceedingly difficult and frustrating, even though I was using keyboard/trackball and not a controller (as KennKong and I do when playing coop maps on his system). I damn near wore out my F6 and F7 keys getting through that bit.

Overall, 4/5 from me. Clever puzzle, but some of the moves required were just too finicky to give it a solid 5.

lifeson99 • Apr 06, 2012 • #59105
102 posts

To me - thankfully, this puzzle did not have the finicky, super-tricky moves.
The only thing that took me several tries was the moving of the dirty cube sideways and through the fizzler while keeping the laser aimed at the laser catcher.

The final cube fling and catch was slightly tricky but not bad.
The main thing is that this map took some intensive thinking WITHOUT any yo-yo dual-portal stuff, balancing cubes on edges of portals, etc . . . and for that alone I give it a 5 of 5.

After Chronologic this is your second map I tested and I must say Im highly impressed. This is exactly what I like small chamber with fizzlers and tricky puzzle. I thought I had it made after 20 min but was stuck at the last bit. After an hour I knew I had to ||change the cubes|| but still tried too fancy moves. Couldnt find the time to finish this marvel but finally after another hour find the way to solve it. Man this is really great stuff. You are becoming my favorite mapper along Jonatan and Chander. Keep them coming ! 5/5
